VAT Refunds

If you are travelling out of the EU via Aalborg Airport, the airport’s service centre can stamp your duty-free/tax-free documents for goods purchased in Denmark with a value of less than DKK 25,000 per item.

For items over DKK 25,000 or items purchased outside Denmark, you must visit the customs office in Frederikshavn or Hirtshals on the day of departure to have your documents stamped.

Danish VAT rate: Danish goods and services include 25% VAT (which corresponds to 20% of the total price).

Who can get a refund: Refunds of Danish VAT are available only to persons residing outside the EU who are departing to a non-EU country.
The refund can only be paid out in Denmark if Denmark is your last EU stop before your final (non-EU) destination.

In general, please be aware of the following:

Aalborg Airport can assist with stamping Danish receipts; however, the actual VAT refund cannot be paid out at Aalborg Airport. Furthermore, the airport has limited authorization to carry out export verification, which means that the following conditions apply:

  • The passenger must be able to provide documentation proving that they reside outside the EU.
  • The passenger must depart from Aalborg Airport within four hours of the export verification.
  • All goods must be presented before export verification can be carried out. This means that export verification cannot be completed if, for example, the goods are in baggage that has already been checked in.
  • Export verification can only be carried out for goods purchased from physical retail stores in Denmark, i.e. not for online purchases.
  • The total value of each individual receipt must be at least DKK 300.00.
  • The value of each individual item must not exceed DKK 25,000.
  • The goods must be taken out of the EU no later than the end of the third month following the month of purchase. For example, if a passenger purchases an item on 4 March, the item must be exported by the end of June.

If these requirements are not met, we refer passengers to the Danish Customs Agency.
