Aalborg Airport - AAL

Aalborg is theatre, music, opera and is also the venue for one of Europe's biggest carnivals (in May). It is the city of the famous Danish Akvavit. With more than 300 restaurants, pubs, etc., it is a paradise for nighthawks

Aalborg also boasts museums, art galleries and historic quarters. Shopping ranges from small specialist shops to supermarkets.

You can encounter Viking history at first hand on the hills sloping down to the Limfjord, where Viking warriors once set out to off reaches.

Gigantic moving sand dune

North Jutland is Denmark's number one holiday destination. Its fantastic scenery is at its most dramatic on the west coast, which also boasts miles of white sandy beaches.

Here you can swim in the sea in the summer and even take your car or cycle onto the beach. Or you can go for a walk along the edge of the cliffs 40 metres above the North Sea, which is gradually eroding the coastal cliffs at the little village of Lønstrup.

Experience the lighthouse at Rubjerg Knude, the bottom half of which is buried by sand. Winter storms cause migration of the sand eastwards.

This is best seen at Råbjerg Mile, a gigantic sand dune - the biggest in Northern Europe - which migrates a distance of some 10-15 metres every year. Now you are in the land of sand and light and huge open skies.

From fish to art in Skagen

Artists were quick to discover the wonderful light and settled in the fishing town of Skagen at Denmark's most northerly point in the 1880s. See their fantastic paintings at the Skagen Museum.

Once Skagen was a poor fishing town; now it is an international tourist destination famous for its lovely yellow houses, narrow streets and the picturesque harbour. There is also a wonderful Jazz & Folk music festival every year in June.

Visit a top-class restaurant or enjoy a beer and fish-dish at the harbour. Do not forget to stand at the very top of the continent at a place called Grenen (the branch), where you can see and feel the two seas meet.

North Jutland offers easy access to the mountains and fjords of Norway with regular ferries from Hirtshals and Frederikshavn, which are just 65 km by motorway from Aalborg.
